I’m with clients in New York City for a twilight/night photography workshop. Although the weather is gloomy, we learned that nothing can stop the wonderful blue hour of twilight. We photographed lower Manhattan last night and ended up at the beautiful and moving World Trade Center Memorial. Enjoy!
Cars pass in front of Belfast City Hall at twilight. Nikon D750 with 16-35mm f/4 AFS G VR Nikkor lens.
I captured this image a few weeks ago on a visit to Ireland. Because I brought a small tripod (in this case, a Gitzo 1-series), I was able to set up for long exposure shots at twilight. The so-called “blue hour” lasts only a few minutes and peaks about 20-30 minutes after sunset.
Discover the art of the long exposure with my illustrated tutorial, Stretching Time.
Join me September 22-25 for an urban-themed location workshop in Denver, Colorado. On this tour, we’ll explore the Colorado capitol with an emphasis on art and architecture. The late September weather in Denver is perfect for evening/twilight shooting, too.
I have arranged for discounted lodging in downtown Denver within walking distance of most of our locations, including:
Colorado Capitol & Courthouse Buildings
Denver Art Museum
Union Station & 16th Street Promenade
RINO Art District (street art near Coors Field)
Denver Botanical Gardens
Denver City Park
Union Station is a great location for creative architectural photography.
If you’re looking to experience urban creativity with your camera, then this is a great photo safari for you. We will learn long exposures, blue hour shooting, multiple exposures, texture blending, and more in the Mile High City.
Instructor: Jason Odell Limit: 10 Photographers RSVP HERE by August 22nd for discounted lodging at the group hotel
Denver’s RINO art district is home to a huge variety of street art.
The Digital Underground workshop took to the streets of Las Vegas.
I’m back from leading a workshop with Deborah Sandidge to the always target-rich environment of Las Vegas, Nevada! This workshop was the first in a series we are calling “Digital Underground,” where we look for urban and edgy subjects, especially after dark!
Flatiron Building at twilight, NYC. 25s exposure with Nikon D800e.
I’m back from New York City, where I had the pleasure of attending Photo Plus Expo 2013. I also had a great time leading a city photo-walk with my very talented colleague, Deborah Sandidge. This year, we made the Flatiron Building the focus of our photo walk. After sunset, some of us hung around and did some long exposures with the heavy traffic and blue hour. I used my Nikon D800e with 24-70mm f/2.8 AFS G zoom Nikkor lens on a tripod to capture this image. I then processed it in Lightroom 5 and Color Efex Pro 4.
Check out “Blue Hour Monday,” a new weekly photo theme on Google Plus curated by Deborah and myself. All you need to do is post an image taken during the magical blue hour and use the hashtag #bluehourmonday on it. Each week, Deborah and I will pick and share some of our favorites with the G+ community!
