Solar Eclipse Photos From Wyoming

Experiencing the Totality of the Great American Eclipse

I made a special road trip to eastern Wyoming and managed to position myself in the path of the August 21st 2017 solar eclipse. What an amazing experience! I had great weather and clear skies for unobstructed viewing. I found a friendly farmer who let me set up in his cornfield.

My Nikon D500 was set up with my 200-500mm Nikkor zoom and  a solar filter and I used it to capture closeups of the sun during the eclipse. My Nikon D810 was set up with the Nikon 8-15mm fisheye Nikkor for some unique wide-angle shots:

My UPS driver just dropped off the latest Nikon lens, the 20mm f/1.8 AFG G Nikkor. I thought I’d share the unboxing joy with you all in the video above. I purchased this lens myself from B&H Photo. I’ve posted the specifications and my first impressions after the jump.

Photo of the Day: Into the Void

Joshua Trees and the Milky Way, Death Valley, California (click for a larger view)

When you have an opportunity to get out to somewhere where it’s dark; and I mean dark, astrophotography is really quite fun. I shot this image with a Nikon D800e camera and 16-35mm f/4 AFS G VRII zoom Nikkor lens. I processed the RAW (NEF) image in Lightroom 4 and then used Viveza 2 and Color Efex Pro 4 to polish it off in post.

Capture notes:

30″ exposure at f/4.0; ISO 1600
