POTD: Moab Monochrome

Morning clouds over rock formations in Arches National Park, Moab, UT (click to enlarge)

A few weeks ago I got back from leading a photo safari and landscape photography workshop in Moab, Utah. Here’s an image that combines several of the techniques I demonstrated that week. This is a panoramic stitch of 4 vertical shots that I captured with my Nikon D810 and 24-120mm f/4 AFS G VR Nikkor lens. I merged the images in Adobe Lightroom CC, and then converted the image to monochrome using Silver Efex Pro 2 in Adobe Photoshop. I also used luminosity masks in Photoshop to open up some of the shadows without affecting the middle and light tones. Finally, the master image was finished back in Lightroom (sharpening, etc.).
