I decided to do a little field testing with my Nikon 1 V1 and FT1 F-mount adapter. I went to the local nature center and instead of bringing everything, I went light. By “light,” I mean my 300mm f/4 AFS Nikkor, TC-14E, and the V1. All told, this is a very manageable kit that on the V1 gives an effective angle of view of using a 1134mm lens on a 35mm body. When you do this, you still need to treat the rig as though you’re using a lens of that focal length, so no hand-holding (especially since the 300/4 has no VR system), proper support, and relatively fast shutter speeds.
For some reason, this chickadee didn’t seem to care that I was only about 2 meters away… and I got lucky. Needless to say, the concept of “frame filling shots of an eyeball” came to mind. The above image is the entire frame from the V1.
